Spectrum Project hosts program for children with disabilities May 16 at Highland Mills Firehouse
Highland Mills - In honor of National Autism Awareness Month, the Village of Woodbury recognized the efforts of The Spectrum Project, an organization that aims to provide a special school for children on the Autism Spectrum in Orange County, at its April 30 board meeting.
Maria Pepe, board member of The Spectrum Project and mother of Steven, 11, who is a high-functioning autistic child, spoke about the lack of services available in Orange County for children such as Steven. She said Steven commutes one hour each way every school day to The Children’s Annex in Kingston to receive appropriate education.
The Spectrum Project’s ultimate goal is to provide a special school for children like Steven in Orange County.
On Saturday, May 16, The Spectrum Project will host all children with disabilities at the Highland Mills Firehouse from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Children will learn about fire safety in their home and get to meet the firefighters as well as take tours of the firehouse and fire trucks. Parents can learn more about The Spectrum Project.
The Orange County Sheriff’s Department also will be on hand to register all children in the Operation Safe Child program. Operation Safe Child is a program where each child has his or her picture taken along with a set of fingerprints. ID cards with relevant information are then printed and given to parents for safekeeping.
Free fire hats, balloons and coloring books for the young children will be available.
Call Pepe at 646-210-5905 or Clara Feliciano at 914-980-9872 or e-mail thespectrumproject@gmail.com to RSVP for this event.
