Schervier Pavilion Latin Club visits new restaurant serving Latino dishes

Coquito owners Bill Leech and his partner Annette “Brandi” Barretto (standing) stop by to make sure members of the Schervier Pavilion “Latin Club” are enjoying their lunch.

WARWICK - Last year, as a result of the brainchild of Operations Analyst Maribella Santiago and with the support of the facility’s Director of Recreation Kari Call, a group of Schervier Pavilion residents formed a Latin Club.

The residents and members, who enjoy celebrating their Hispanic heritage, meet once each month to speak Spanish, talk about their native lands, their culture, their childhood and, in general, rediscover their roots.

On May 12, Latin Club members and Schervier Pavilion staff traveled for lunch to nearby Coquito, a new restaurant serving Latin American cuisine at 31 Forester Ave. in Warwick.

The menu created by owner Bill Leech and his partner Annette “Brandi” Barretto offers both American favorites and a selection of Latin and traditional Puerto Rican dishes. Among other selections Latin Club members were invited to sample Empanadas, which are turnovers stuffed with beef, cheese, shrimp or crab meat along with Mofongo, mashed green plantains stuffed with pork, beef or chicken.

“The purpose of all recreational therapy,” said Call, a certified therapy recreation specialist, “is to restore, treat or rehabilitate in order to improve functioning and independence as well as reduce or eliminate the effects of illness or disability.”

“Therapeutic recreation,” she added, “is essential to the quality of life and the quality of care of individuals receiving health and human services. At Schervier Pavilion, we host a variety of clubs for members with special interests. And we have International days where we celebrate a particular national heritage that brings back pleasant memories and reminds people of where and how they grew up with their families including native customs, foods and language.”
