Night walkers step up the fight against cancer

Goshen students Mackenzie Sproul and Ceili Boles mourn their friend Hannah Crossley.

They walked all night around the track at Goshen High School, their way guided by luminaries. These dedicated supporters of the American Cancer Society raised thousands for cancer research and treatment during last weekend’s Relay for Life while also taking time to reflect on the stellar lives of two young women who died in recent years.

Hannah Crossley, a Goshen High School sophomore, died of bone cancer on April 19, 2008, at age 15. Caitlin Hammaren of Slate Hill was a college student slain in the 2007 mass killing at Virginia Tech.

Teams of people set up tents around the track late Friday afternoon, and took turns walking or running until the closing ceremony and final lap at 7 a.m.

Orange Regional Medical Center sponsored the marathon, and Crystal Run Health Care sponsored the survivor activities portion of the event. Grace Haddad was chair of the Relay Committee, David Bechtle and Terry Meyer were co-chairs. Committee members included Tom Aris, Ellen Cohen, Carolyn De Marmels, Linda Stern, Debby Brown, Becky Crossley, and Janice Ptak.

Music filled the night air, thanks to performances by the chamber choir from Minisink Valley High School, Caitlin’s alma mater; bagpiper Tom Flemmings; the Haywyre Band; and DJ Rich Pell.

The Relay is the American Cancer Society’s signature activity. To participate, form a team, or dedicate a luminaria at a local Relay, or to make a donation, call 1-800-227-2345 or visit cancer.org.
