Central Valley - Excitement was in the air as approximately 7,600 students stepped into one of Monroe-Woodbury School District buildings last week.

There was nervous pacing, separation anxiety and even some tears - and that was just while parents were packing their young children’s lunch boxes. As one parent noted: “Like any parent, I’ve dreamed about my child’s first day of kindergarten practically since she took her first step.”

Superintendent Joseph DiLorenzo and Assistant Superintendent Edward J. Mehrhof said that the schools, the faculty and staff were ready and excited to start this new school year.

In remarks to parents at Pine Tree Elementary, School Board President Dr. Michael DiGeronimo said that all the nine members of the Monroe-Woodbury Board of Education welcomed everyone to another school year.

“The lynch pin in the education of our children are the hard working and dedicated teachers of this district,” said DiGeronimo, who is starting his second year as president of the Board. “However, parents are teachers also. Research has shown that in the early years of a child’s education they learn more and at a much faster pace than at any other time in life. Parents and their participation are also a corner stone in their child’s educational development. Therefore, it is essential that you strengthen your parent-child relationship.

“Parents are the first and most influential teachers of their children; they establish the foundation for a child’s success in school and life,” DiGeronimo added.

Editor’s note: The Photo News thanks the teachers, staff, administrators, school board members and others who generously donated their photos to the newspaper.
