Warwick - The Warwick Fire Department’s Excelsior Hose Company No. 1 recently celebrated its 140th anniversary with a dinner at the Warwick County Club. Among those feted at the event for their service to the organization were 50-year member Frank Fotino and 60-year member Walter O’Dell.

Both men are past chiefs of the department.

The evening included a large display of historic Excelsior memorabilia at Warwick Station One, where the company is quartered.

The first permanent fire company in Warwick came into being on Sept. 8, 1869, when 49 members organized themselves under the name of the Warwick Valley Fire Engine Company.

Five days later the name was changed to the Excelsior Fire Engine Company No. 1.

The members, for reasons lost to time, changed the company name once again on Nov. 7, 1871, and since that day these citizens who proudly and selflessly volunteer, have been known as the Excelsior Hose Company No. 1.
