Get your costume ready: Parade and party are set for 2 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 18, in downtown Chester

Chester — As Chester gets ready for its 20th annual Halloween parade and party next Sunday, a new sponsor has joined the effort to keep the tradition going.

This week Provident Bank donated $2,000, which will help buy the food, prizes, games, musical entertainment, and other treats that through the years have made Chester the place to go for Halloween fun. Walter Popailo, a sales associate for the Provident Bank branch in Chester, has been working with the Halloween committee and helped secure the donation.

Other sponsors include the Village of Chester Police Department, the Chester Village Police Benevolent Association, the Chester Kiwanis Club, and the Chester Community Fund.

This is a special year for Halloween in Chester because it almost didn’t happen. Its longtime organizer and founder, Phyllis Battiato, retired after doing most of the work for the past 19 years. But a spirited group of volunteers has stepped up so that Chester’s fairy princesses and scary monsters will not be disappointed. The new committee is continuing all of the favorite features of the event that has made the parade and party so popular in the community, and adding a few new features too. Each participant is asked to bring one non-perishable food item for the Chester food pantry and one bag of candy, which can be dropped off at registration.

Also new this year, the committee is collecting donations of new and used Halloween costumes and accessories for children in need. They can be dropped off at the Village of Chester police station, located at 47 Main Street.

The Bellvale Bruderhof will be donating the use of its tractors for hayrides. The Halloween committee has hired a DJ and is working on lining up a live band. Port-o-johns will be on hand, and participants are asked to bring a chair for comfort in watching the parade.

As in past years, there will be a costume competition in a range of categories, as well as giveaways so that no child will go away empty handed. Sugar-free snacks will also be available.

It’s not too late to enter a float in the parade. Businesses, community groups, families, and individuals are invited to take part. To register a float, call Jack Courtenay of the Chester Village Police Benevolent Association at 494-6595.

Anyone who wishes to make a donation or volunteer may call Lynn Scire of Ark-Angels Animal Rescue at 610-4062.

    If you go
When: 2 to 5 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 18, rain or shine. Registration for the parade starts at 1 p.m.
Where: The parade starts at 10 Greycourt Ave. in historic downtown Chester and ends at Vadala Road. The party starts right after the parade.
