This photo of a very large bobcat was taken Oct. 2 about 8:15 a.m. from Jean Ciampo’s home on Spruce Hill Lane in Goshen. “Needless to say, we were very surprised as we watched this ‘big cat’ walk across our back yard and then turn around and walk back,” said Ciampo. “He wasn’t in any kind of hurry, he just seemed to be out for an early morning stroll. We saw him again on Saturday afternoon but he came out of the woods and went right back in.” Ciampo said the DEC told her that bobcats are rare in this area and they are definitely a threat to domestic pets.”

" A healthy bobcat is not usually a threat to cats or dogs. I grew up in an area with many bobcats and I don't know ANYONE who had a problem with them. They typically hunt small rodents (e.g. rats). If there aren't enough of their preferred prey around, I imagine however they would prey on dogs or cats. Bobcats can get rabies, so yes if you see one and it doesn't run away from you (which is what a healthy bobcat would do in the wild) head the other way. "
