Chester — Helen Anne Livingston, the superintendent of the Chester school district, has left her job.
According to a source who works at the school, Livingston announced her departure at two faculty meetings on Tuesday, the first at the Chester Academy and the second at Chester Elementary School. She cleaned out her office and is no longer working for the district, the source said on Wednesday.
When making her announcement, Livingston read from a statement, saying that she and the school board had come to a mutual agreement to part ways, the source said. There is a legal separation agreement between Livingston and the school board, according to the source. The reason for the split is unknown.
School board president Wendy Murray declined to comment for this story. The school board next meets at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 28, at the Chester Academy.
Livingston’s attorney, Mike Lambert, could not be contacted by press time.
The news surprised Mary Luciana, who was school board president when Livingston was hired in August 2006 and closely watches developments at the school. She later became one of Livingston’s critics.
“It’s not easy to get rid of a superintendent,” Luciana told The Chronicle Wednesday. “This is not something I’ve ever seen before. There’s been no discussion, no innuendo. For it to happen that fast, I don’t understand it. I don’t know if something came up.”

Livingston’s time at Chester was her first as a superintendent. She came to Chester from a school district upstate, where she was a principal.
She served out her first three-year contract. In April, the school board offered her another three-year contract at an annual salary of $139,050.
In May, two Livingston supporters on the board were voted out.
“In most cases when a superintendent leaves in the middle of a contract, there is some type of payout,” Luciana said. “I can’t imagine this wasn’t the case here.”
Livingston ran into trouble recently. The Town of Chester Police arrested her on June 9, charging her with second-degree harassment. She is alleged to have followed a student’s father, Leonard Marino, out of the Chester Academy building and into the parking lot, screaming at him, pointing her finger in his face, and attempting to stop him from getting into his car. Her next court date is set for Nov. 10.
