Library asks for budget approval
|
Monroe - If the Monroe Free Library’s proposed 2010 budget is passed on Election Day, the average homeowner will save almost $40 a year on library taxes, according to library officials.
“We’re always looking to maximize the return on the taxpayers’ investment,” said Library Director Marilyn McIntosh. “Through responsible budgeting, we’re actually able to do more with less from each household.”
Because the total assessed value of the Town of Monroe has risen in the last year (from $387.7 million to $561.7 million), taxpayer cost will drop from $2.82 per $1,000 of assessed value to $2.07 per $1,000 if the proposed budget is passed.
This means that the average home, assessed at $50,000, will contribute $103.50, down from $141 in 2009.
The referendum, located at the top of the ballot under the headline “Proposal Number Three, Proposition Number One,” is a yes-no vote on a proposed increase of $69,855. The increase would go to fund DVDs and CDs for the collection, outreach to schools and programs for children and young adults, and more adult programs like cooking tutorials and book discussions.
