Stanhope — The borough is eligible for some grant opportunities, according to Janice Hunts of the Shade Tree Commission.
The Green Communities Grant, $3,000 available through the NJ Department of Environmental Protection, allows communities to create a forestry management plan with the use of an outside consultant. It is a 5-year plan which helps municipalities devise a list of trees, as well as create a hazardous tree list. From that list townships prioritize trees and remove hazardous ones.
The second grant is the Business Stimulus Fund, which is used to defray the cost of removing hazardous trees, and replace the ones deemed the worst.
There is no financial commitment required from the borough on either grant.
Hunts suggested to Mayor Diana Kuncken that two members of the borough council work with the Shade Tree Commission on the management plan, and suggested Rosemarie Maio and James Benson be the two. Kuncken said the applications must be reviewed first and she does not want to commit members of the council at the current time.
Hunts said applications are due Dec. 4.
