SPARTA — The Lake Mohawk Boardwalk will transform into a bustling Weihnachtsmarkt or German Christmas Market starting on Friday, Dec. 4.
The annual event, which takes place from 1 p.m. to 10 p.m. on Friday, and 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 5 will feature a selection of vendors, musical entertainment, and food and drink.
The Weihnachtsmarkt will showcase some 40 vendors who will sell unique and traditional gifts as well as Christmas items, including European chocolates, handmade ornaments, wooden pyramids, Scandinavian woolen goods, fine art, freshly made apple strudels, stolen, Linzer tarts, soups, packaged goods, nutcrackers and smoker men.
As shoppers browse, sizzling German sausages, goulash, sauerbraten, soups, pastries, pretzels, roasted nuts, and warmed mulled spiced wine (gluewein) will be prepared by vendors.
“The Christmas Market delivers fun and festivity to everyone in Sparta, but importantly, proceeds that are raised are then distributed to the local community,” said Judy Beelaert, vendor chairperson.
“Last year, $10,000 was distributed to the Food Pantry at Sparta Presbyterian Church, Food Panty - Partnership for Social Services (Franklin), Meals on Wheels, Untied Way of Sussex County, Domestic Abuse Services (DASI) in Newton, and the German Language Department of the Sparta School District (scholarships). In addition, all schools that participated in the event received a donation as well.”
This local tradition was started by the Lake Mohawk Christmas Market Committee who wanted to raise funds for local charities, while creating a unique event.
