Economic Adventure comes to Byram school

The Centenary SIFE Team celebrating the successful completion of the Global Economic Adventure at Hackettstown High School.

Byram — The Centenary College Students In Free Enterprise (SIFE) Team recently brought the world to Byram Lakes Elementary School, through the Global Economic Adventure.

This project involved 132 first through fourth graders, helping them to obtain free enterprise skills and enhance their knowledge of the world.

Simulations enable participants to feel as if they are truly travelling around the globe. The five countries represented in this project include: Australia, Brazil, China, Ghana and Russia. At each of the five country stations, Centenary SIFE Team members dressed in authentic clothing. The stations were colorfully decorated in such a way that the participating students felt as if they were actually visiting each location.

After participating in a pretest to assess the student’s original knowledge of the subject matter, they began in the United States where they received a passport, United States currency, a fanny pack and a suitcase. Upon arriving at each country, the students participated in a lesson addressing six key business principles: market economics, success skills, entrepreneurship, financial literacy, environmental sustainability and business ethics.

The conclusion of this lesson offered an opportunity for the participants to engage in global commerce by having them exchange their US dollars for local currency and then purchase souvenirs. The project concluded with a post-test to enable the team to measure the impact of the Global Economic Adventure on their participants.

Upon its completion, the Centenary SIFE Team’s pre/post-testing measured an increase in knowledge of 178 percent.
