Chabad hosts Hanukkah events for all ages

Children at Chabad Hebrew School have fun making “latkes” (potato pancakes), a Hanukkah tradition

Monroe — Hanukkah, the Jewish festival of lights, is celebrated this year from Dec. 11 to 19 and Chabad of Orange County, headed by Rabbi Pesach and Chana Burston, is hosting an myriad of Hanukkah events for all, regardless of background or affiliation, from community menorah lightings around the county, to the grand community “Hanukkah in Candy Land,” among other programs and services.

Chabad’s annual Hanukkah Bowl Party will be held on Tuesday, Dec. 15, from 5 to 8 p.m., at Colonial Lanes, 78 Brookside Ave., in Chester. The party will feature the theme of “Hanukkah in Candy Land.” The construction of a giant jelly bean menorah will be the highlight of the event.

In addition to the giant menorah lighting, the event will feature a variety of innovative activities, including sandy-candy dreidels, chocolate “gelt” toss, edible dreidels and a hot buffet dinner, Hanukkah treats and bowling.

Chabad will be hosting public menorah lightings throughout the county. The ceremonies will include the traditional lighting of the menorah, as well as singing of Hanukkah songs, “dreidels,” hot “latkes” (potato pancakes) and other traditional Hanukkah treats such as doughnuts and chocolate “gelt.” Local dignitaries will be joining and sharing words of greeting. These programs are free of charge and open to everyone, regardless of background or affiliation. Lighting will be held in Monroe, Goshen, Chester, Washingtonville and Tuxedo:

Washingtonville — Sunday, Dec. 13, at 5:30 p.m., EJ McLaughlin Square. Special guest: Village of Washingtonville Mayor Thomas DeVinko.

Tuxedo Park — Monday, Dec. 14, at 7 p.m., Tuxedo Train Station, across from Tuxedo Park entrance. Special guest: Town of Tuxedo Supervisor Peter Dolan. Menorah lighting will be outdoors, followed by reception inside the train station.
